Importing a CSV file

You can prepare deck data in CSV file format and import it to iAnki.

What is a CSV file?

CSV stands for comma( , )-separated values.
As the name suggests, all data in a CSV file are separated by commas. CSV files can be easily prepared and edited in Text Editor, Microsoft Excel®, or similar software.

Import file format

・File extension: .csv .txt
・Recommended text encoding: UTF-8
・Recommended number of cards: No more than 1,000
・Number of characters per card: 600 characters, maximum 12 lines
*If you use a file that differs from the format described above, cards may not be registered successfully.
*Decks with images cannot be made from CSV files. To create decks with images, make them online.

Preparing CSV files in Microsoft Excel®
Type data for the front of the card in column A, and data for the back in column B. To type text on a new line, insert a return in the cell. (You can insert a return in a cell by pressing ALT + ENTER.)


From the File menu, select Save as, and save the file in CSV format.




Open the CSV file you just created in Notepad.


From the File menu, select Save as, and save the file in UTF-8 encoding.




Preparing CSV files in Text Editor
Type data for the front and back of the card, and separate them with commas( , ). Press ENTER after completing each card.
To insert a return in a card, type the content in quotation marks( " ).


From the File menu, select Save as, and save the file. If your cards contain foreign characters, save the file in UTF-8 encoding.
